Politics and Humanism

So, I'm writing today on something that has been stirring around with me for sometime. It's becoming rather obviously that something is wrong in our country. Terrible things happen all the time. School shootings, long running debates that get nowhere, and shameful name calling. What needs to change.

I don't know.

I have no solutions. Unlike the pundits that dance across our newspaper headlines and through our news media, I have no answers. I certainly don't think the blame should or could be laid at one person's feet. But even with all of this, the only thought I can think is I am so glad that I am alive right now.

I have been reading many accounts of 19th century America. Don't get me wrong, a lot of advancements were made. The Emancipation Proclamation was finally signed, women were slowly getting more rights. But I am so glad that I live in 2013, as a woman who can vote. As a person who can express my religious and sexual preferences without (much) fear for my personal safety.

I am so glad that my friends and family have the ability to express themselves. That we have the technology to keep in touch. That I can support the movements I feel passionate about, and not have to turn a blind eye to the people I love. I also feel grateful that most Americans have been purged of their barely hidden Anglo-saxonism.

So, as bad as it gets here and now, may we continue improving, even if it's at a crawling pace.
